1.5-billion-euro contract for Corinth–Kos HVDC power interconnection
Hellenic Cables, the cables segment of Cenergy Holdings, has signed a new interconnection project through its wholly owned subsidiary Fulgor S.A. for the Corinth–Kos high-voltage direct current (HVDC) electricity interconnection.
The project is a turnkey contract awarded by the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO), with a total value of approximately 1.5 billion euros. It covers the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of the 320kV Corinth–Kos HVDC interconnection.
The project includes approximately 1,260 km of subsea cables and 30 km of underground cables. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and be completed in 2030. Under the terms of the project, Hellenic Cables will be responsible for its end-to-end delivery, from one converter station to the other, and will manufacture the HVDC power cables at its facilities in Corinth and Thebes.
Commenting on the new project, Cenergy Holdings CEO Alexis Alexiou said that “projects such as the Corinth–Kos interconnection highlight the increasingly important role of advanced HVDC technology in developing resilient grids and supporting the energy transition.”
He added that it is a landmark project for Greece and that “we are proud to support IPTO’s strategic vision for a stronger and more interconnected national electricity transmission system, contributing our expertise and execution capabilities.”
The Corinth–Kos interconnection is a strategically important project that will connect the Dodecanese islands to Greece’s mainland electricity transmission system. With a transmission capacity of 1 GW, the project will contribute to the gradual phase-out of costly, high-carbon-emission oil-fired power plants, while significantly enhancing the security and reliability of energy supply. The signing of the contract is subject to the completion of the required regulatory procedures and approvals.
