Greek yachting: Strong momentum in 2026

The summer 2026 season for Greece’s professional yacht charter market ended on a positive note, confirming yachting’s strength as one of the most important and high-value segments of Greek tourism, with a share of the international market exceeding 20%.

According to the latest data and indications gathered by the Hellenic Association of Marine Tourism, the market remained broadly stable in terms of charter numbers compared with 2025, while the total value of charters increased.

Overall charter market trends

In terms of total value, charter rates appear to have risen in 2026 compared with the previous year. However, performance varied across the different market segments.

The upper end of the market recorded a significant increase in demand, confirming the growing strength of the premium segment. The mid-market segment, by contrast, saw a marginal decline, while the lower end recorded a slight increase.

This divergence provides an important indication of the market’s overall direction, reflecting not only changes in charter volumes but also shifts in average charter value and the profile of demand.

Greece strengthens its position in the Mediterranean market

In a highly competitive environment, Greece appears to rank among the leading destinations in the international yacht charter market, competing with established and emerging destinations such as France, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Montenegro and Turkey.

The Greek market is performing strongly across the main vessel categories — motor yachts, sailing yachts and catamarans — with particular strength in the premium segment. Meanwhile, charter activity across the Mediterranean is relatively evenly split between the Western Mediterranean (Spain, France and Italy) and the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Turkey, Montenegro and Croatia).

Croatia remains a major competitor, particularly in the smaller-vessel segment, with an extensive sailing yacht charter fleet, although it has also become increasingly attractive for larger yachts in recent years. Turkey is recovering gradually but continues to face challenges.

The competitiveness of Greek yachting depends not only on the number of vessels available or the volume of charters, but also, crucially, on the ability to maintain high charter values and deliver a consistently high-quality, competitive product.

Sustaining strong demand and healthy charter rates, alongside the continued upgrading of services and infrastructure, will be key to further strengthening Greece’s position in the Mediterranean market.

International customers

International customers remain a key pillar of the Greek yachting sector, although trends vary across source markets.

The US market, which has gained particular importance for the industry in recent years, recorded an increase in 2026 compared with 2025. American clients remain a particularly important customer base for premium and luxury yachting, generating high per-capita spending and making a significant contribution to the overall value of charters.

The European market, meanwhile, remained broadly stable, with modest variations across traditional source markets such as Germany, the UK, France and Switzerland. By contrast, demand declined from the Middle East, Australia and Asia, while interest from South America strengthened.

Maintaining a balanced mix of source markets remains crucial for the sector, reducing dependence on individual markets and strengthening the resilience of Greek yachting to changes in the international economic environment.

Shift towards last-minute bookings

Another defining feature of the 2026 season was the increase in last-minute bookings compared with the previous year.

This trend reflects a broader shift in traveller behaviour, with customers increasingly making their final decisions closer to their departure dates.

For businesses in the sector, this had a direct impact on seasonal planning, availability management and commercial strategy, making flexibility and the ability to respond quickly to changing demand even more important.

Encouraging signs for 2027

With the industry already looking ahead to next year, the first indications for the 2027 season are encouraging.

Based on enquiries received so far, initial bookings and international demand for Greece, the Hellenic Association of Marine Tourism estimated that the market could grow in 2027 compared with 2026.

Further growth, however, will depend on more than international demand alone. The competitiveness of Greek yachting is closely linked to maintaining a stable and competitive institutional and tax framework, developing and upgrading port infrastructure and marinas, and ensuring high-quality services throughout the marine tourism value chain.

Ioannis Kourounis, president of the Hellenic Association of Marine Tourism, said:

“The 2026 season gave us a clear picture of how the international yachting market is evolving and, above all, how customer behaviour is changing. Greece retains an exceptionally strong position on the international map, with significant competitive advantages, ranging from its natural environment and the diversity of its destinations to the quality of its professional fleet and the services provided.

“The goal for the coming years must be to further strengthen this position in terms of competitiveness, quality and sustainable growth. We also hope that the implementation of the electronic charter agreement will enable the systematic collection and use of official statistics, providing an even more comprehensive and accurate picture of the sector’s performance in the years ahead.”

According to the Hellenic Association of Marine Tourism, marine tourism has a significant economic footprint, as the activity generated by a professional yacht creates a multiplier effect across a broad range of the Greek economy. These benefits extend from crews, marinas, shipyards and technical services to restaurants, provisioning, transport providers and local businesses in the destinations visited by the vessels.

In an increasingly competitive international environment, maintaining and further strengthening Greece’s position represents both an opportunity and a strategic priority, ensuring that Greek yachting continues to develop as one of the country’s leading pillars of high-quality tourism.
