Additional €250 million in measures expected for 2026

Ημερομηνία: 02-09-2026

The package of economic measures the government is expected to announce at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) is estimated to exceed €1 billion by a wide margin for 2027.

However, as Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis revealed in an interview with ERTNews, the package will also include measures to be implemented within the current year.

The exact amount will be determined by the economic team, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said in an interview with Mega TV. “Some — a small part of the measures — could be implemented this year, provided there is fiscal room. It was estimated at around €250 million, but some funds were allocated month by month to keep fuel prices under control. A few measures may possibly be implemented towards the end of the year, but the overwhelming majority will concern 2027,” he said.

As of late September through to the end of the year, several groups are due to receive state support, including the rent rebate, the heating allowance and the €300 annual payment for pensioners.

Against this backdrop, the economic team may have secured a “small buffer” of €200-250 million, which could be used to increase the €300 payment to pensioners and/or the heating allowance, particularly given the continued rise in fuel prices.

Rent refund

From September, rent refunds will begin to be paid into beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

The measure concerns tenants who are entitled to an annual refund equivalent to one month’s rent and are due to receive the payment by the end of November. It also covers teachers and healthcare workers in regional areas, who may be eligible for a refund equivalent to a total of two months’ rent.

Heating allowance

If the sharp rise in fuel prices continues, driven in part by higher oil prices on international markets, heating oil could rise dramatically  in October.

According to estimates by petrol station operators, if heating oil went on sale today, the price would be around €1.80 per litre, compared with approximately €1.08 per litre last year.

Under the 2026 budget, €270 million has been earmarked for the heating allowance. Given current conditions, an increase in the amount paid to beneficiaries cannot be ruled out.

Eligibility criteria combine income and property ownership.

Financial support for pensioners

In late November, around 1.87 million pensioners and recipients of welfare benefits will receive the permanent annual payment of €300.

The benefit is paid on the basis of specific income, asset and age criteria, while the planned gradual increase in the payment could potentially begin as early as this year.
