Can AI Preserve the Soul of Greek Hospitality?
In a previous publication, the topic that was explored was whether the implementation of artificial intelligence can accommodate employee well-being enhancement, with numerous applications including reducing repetitive tasks and improving overall communication between employees and guests. Nevertheless, a question of vital importance continues to persist: Can Artificial Intelligence coexist with the values that define Greek Hospitality?
As a country, Greece over the years has established its philoxenia, a long tradition that depicts genuine hospitality and warmth for its visitors, thus its recognition of it. Greek Hospitality, unlike destinations in other countries, is primarily roots in both human interactions and personal relationships. As artificial intelligence, a term that refers to computational systems performing tasks in regard to human input is increasingly prioritized and integrated in hotels, ensuring that innovation can strengthen philoxenia instead of replacing these core values is a challenge that is risen.

Research suggests that hospitality and hotel operations in Greece is approaching the integration of artificial intelligence with this balanced perspective, as the aim is to strengthen hospitality without causing issues in the long term. This is reinforced by a study conducted by the research Institute for Tourism with the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels in 2025. The study concluded that the implementation of artificial intelligence in Hotels all over Greece is still in early stages. Two in six hotels have either implemented tools powered with Artificial Intelligence or have already created a plan to fulfill investments in the near future. Ai chatbots, automated responses to costumer reviews and predictive analysis are applications utilized to support administrative tasks and communication within the Hotels and with costumers. The aim is not to replace the employees in Hotels but for Artificial intelligence to accommodate the improvement in operational efficiency while simultaneously reducing routine workloads.
Artificial intelligence as an approach is of vital importance as the Greek Tourism Industry is facing a number of workforce shortages. Hotel employees often experience unfair and demanding workloads, mainly in the summer season as increased guest expectations and long hours may contribute to stress and burnout. Therefore, Artificial Intelligence may alleviate these pressures as repetitive responsibilities can be fulfilled automatically, faster communication may be enabled with guest and scheduling may improve. This reinforces that greater employee wellbeing and improved communication and effort in personal interactions with visitors may be strengthened with reducing these daily pressures.
Nonetheless, the future of Greek Hospitality cannot solely be defined by Artificial Intelligence. This is evident in Deloitte’s Greece’s The Greek Hospitality Reimagined report where it illustrates that hotels are aware that AI is a driver of vital importance for innovations and competitiveness, but human capital is identified as the industry’s most important asset. AI therefore is viewed as complement to employees instead of a substitute. Thus, the future will depend on the combination of technology with motivated employees that continue and prioritize authentic and personalized experiences.
All in all, the aim does not refer to replacing the human input that itself creates a uniqueness for Greek hospitality but to strengthen it. AI can handle repetitive and time-consuming tasks hence allowing the employees to give greater focus on what AI cannot replicate: emotional intelligence, meaningful interactions, cultural understanding and empathy. If AI is utilized in such a manner, Greek philoxenia may continue to be preserved.
