Chevron seismic surveys to begin before end-2026
Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou met with Chevron’s head in Greece, Beatrice Bienvenu, in the US.
According to the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the meeting confirmed the timetable for the launch of seismic surveys before the end of 2026 in the Ionian Sea, as well as south of the Peloponnese and Crete. Papastavrou discussed with Bienvenu the next steps towards achieving the shared goals and adhering to the timetable, despite the demanding schedule. In this context, it was “noted that the government is developing and maturing Greece’s hydrocarbons market, while also strengthening the confidence of international investors, with both the milestones and all environmental requirements and safety conditions being observed.”

The minister also attended the Atlantic Council’s high-level dinner, titled “Powering the Future: A US-European High-Level Dialogue on Electrification”, which was held in New York.
Papastavrou highlighted Greece’s leading role in shaping the new European energy architecture, the importance of interconnections and the need to address the weaponisation of energy. During the discussion, which was attended by senior officials from the United States and European countries, Papastavrou stressed that energy cannot be used as a tool to exert pressure or for geopolitical blackmail, whether by Russia, Iran or any other country.
Energy is life and interconnections are bridges, he said adding that threats to and obstacles in energy interconnections undermine growth and prosperity. Strengthening energy interconnections is a prerequisite for greater security, resilience and cooperation between countries.
In this context, Papastavrou highlighted Greece’s pivotal position and the importance of developing new energy corridors, with particular reference to the Greece-Cyprus-Israel interconnection, which, as he noted, is of particular interest to the US side as well, as well as the GREGY interconnection, which could link Egypt with Greece and the European market.
He made particular reference to Alexandroupolis as an important energy gateway and a key point for regional energy security. Referring to the development of domestic energy resources, Papastavrou highlighted the participation of major international energy groups, such as Chevron and ExxonMobil, in Greece. As he noted, Greece is leveraging its comparative advantages while simultaneously strengthening its energy security and geopolitical position.
