Dry bulk shipping undergoing a qualitative upgrade

Ημερομηνία: 14-05-2026

Dry bulk shipping is undergoing a qualitative upgrade, according to data presented at the established Roundtable Workshop organised for the third consecutive year by Laskaridis Shipping, held as part of the Posidonia maritime exhibition, which opens on 1 June 2026.

The event was held under the auspices of the Ambassador of Australia to Greece, Alison Duncan. Among the distinguished speakers were Carlo di Meglio, Manager, Operations West of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, and Samuel McSkimming, Chief Executive Officer of Pilbara Ports Authority.

The invited speakers shared valuable insights and expectations regarding developments in the dry bulk shipping sector before a high-level audience comprising senior executives from major ship registries, classification societies operating in Greece, as well as the Vice President of Intercargo, Metaxia Psaltis.

Particular emphasis was placed on operational risks and navigational challenges associated with Port Hedland, Port Dampier and other ports in Western Australia, leading to a substantive and constructive exchange among participants.

Key developments presented

During the workshop, several important developments relevant to the dry bulk shipping community were also presented, including:

  • Pilbara Ports Authority indicated that it will positively consider, upon request, new machinery inspections conducted by independent third-party bodies and classification societies, in addition to the inspection companies already accepted.
  • It was announced that dredging works will be carried out to create a new navigation channel, allowing vessels to bypass Zone 5 of the Port Hedland channel. The works are scheduled between September and November 2026, and are expected to enhance the safety of departures from the increasingly busy port.
  • Australian Maritime Safety Authority reaffirmed that remote inspections remain acceptable, except in cases involving the verification of findings that could lead to a vessel detention, where the physical presence of classification society surveyors remains mandatory.
