EU-US trade deal impossible to implement with Trump tariffs
Iratxe Garcia-Perez, President of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, was clear, answering a question raised by “N” in Strasbourg: “we are experiencing a trade war from President Trump and under these circumstances it is impossible for Europe to adopt any rule” from the EU-US agreement in Scotland.
“There is the political will and I think it is obvious, when President Trump is waging a trade war and increasing tariffs, that it is impossible for the EU to adopt any regulation for zero tariffs,” she replied to Naftemporiki from the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
It is recalled that the European Parliament is putting a “brake” on the historic trade agreement, signed by Ursula von der Leyen and Donald Trump in Scotland, due to rising tensions between the EU and the US, following Donald Trump’s latest punitive tariffs.
At a press briefing in Strasbourg, she emphasized that the EU must finally speak Trump’s language and not hesitate.
“Mercosur is the best answer to Trump”
Referring to the US president’s punitive tariffs and his threats to new ones, she stressed that the European Parliament will not vote on the EU-US trade agreement and that the tool against coercion should be used.
Referring to Donald Trump’s actions in Venezuela, Iratxe Garcia-Perez noted that “they are illegal actions” and that “all he cares about is oil.”
However, she supported the Mercosur agreement, as, as she argued, “it is the best answer to Trump. It is crucial that it be implemented.”
