Fighter aircraft modernization program – Delivery of the 50th F-16V fighter aircraft to the Hellenic Air Force

Ημερομηνία: 16-04-2026

The 50th F-16V fighter aircraft—out of a total of 82—has been delivered to the Hellenic Air Force by Lockheed Martin, in cooperation with the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI), as part of one of the most active fighter aircraft upgrade programs in Europe, with a timeline extending to 2027. It is also noted that an additional upgrade program for 38 F-16V (Block 50) aircraft is moving toward approval and, according to sources, is estimated at approximately 1 billion euros.

As stated by Alexandros Diakopoulos, Chairman and CEO of HAI, “the delivery of the 50th F-16 Viper represents a significant milestone for the program. It demonstrates that a highly demanding effort is now progressing at a steady and accelerating pace, delivering tangible benefits to the operational capabilities of the Hellenic Air Force. We remain fully committed to completing the program with consistency and responsibility.”

Operational and industrial benefits

According to HAI, the transition to the Viper configuration enhances the operational capability of the Hellenic Air Force, upgrading pilots’ ability to detect, track, and respond with greater speed and precision. These capabilities were demonstrated during high-intensity air operations, such as Exercise INIOCHOS 2026, where advanced sensors and mission systems supported complex operations alongside allied forces.

Beyond flight operations, the F-16V program also strengthens domestic industrial capabilities. With the support of Lockheed Martin teams, work carried out at HAI facilities equips Greek engineers and technicians with the expertise required to maintain and upgrade the fleet domestically, enhancing long-term readiness. According to Mike Shoemaker, Vice President of the Integrated Fighter Group at Lockheed Martin, “as the F-16V program progresses, the focus extends beyond delivering advanced capabilities in the air to building the foundations required to sustain them.” He added that “Lockheed Martin’s partnership with Greece is centered on developing enduring capabilities, including investment in human capital, skills, and infrastructure that will support the Hellenic Air Force for years to come.”
