GEK TERNA expands its presence in Romania

GEK TERNA Group is expanding its presence in Romania by undertaking a new project for PPC Renewables, with an initial budget of €144.6 million.

The project, known as the EPC NADAB HV energy project, involves high-voltage (HV) infrastructure in western Romania, in the Chișineu-Criș / Nadab area of Arad County. The contract was signed in August and involves connecting a large-scale photovoltaic project to the country’s national transmission grid.

The project will be delivered under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract on a turnkey basis. It includes the design, civil works, procurement and transportation of equipment, installation and commissioning of two main 400/110 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations, two underground 400 kV lines and the extension of the transmission system operator’s outdoor 400 kV substation.

Significant footprint

GEK TERNA has already established a significant construction footprint in Romania through the railway projects it has undertaken, with the Craiova–Igiroasa corridor as a key focus.

At the end of July, a €380 million contract was signed for the Filiași–Igiroasa section (Lot 2) between Romania’s National Railway Company (CFR) and the TrackWorks consortium. The consortium comprises TERNA, the construction arm of GEK TERNA Group, with a 74% stake, and Alstom Romania. The project involves the design and full reconstruction of a section of approximately 44 km.

This followed the signing, at the end of March, of the €410 million contract for the Craiova–Filiași section (Lot 1), in which TERNA holds a 69% stake. The two sections form the approximately 83-km Craiova–Igiroasa corridor, as part of the wider upgrade of the Craiova–Drobeta Turnu Severin–Caransebeș railway line.

The project is designed to allow passenger trains to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h and freight trains at up to 120 km/h, while also accommodating trains of up to 740 metres in length.

The group is also exploring the Romanian concessions market. As GEK TERNA Group chairman and CEO George Peristeris has said, the group is examining tenders being promoted or planned by the Romanian government, although no specific plans have been announced so far.
