Greece and Israel to sign “Achilles’ Shield” air defense deal on Monday

Greece and Israel are expected to sign agreements on Monday in Tel Aviv on the “Achilles’ Shield” programme, totaling €3 billion.

According to sources, confirming an earlier report by ‘Kathimerini’, the agreements will be signed between the General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments of the Greek Ministry of National Defence and the Israeli Ministry of Defence’s Directorate of International Defence Cooperation (SIBAT), as well as corresponding Israeli defence bodies and defence companies participating in the programme.

The multi-layered air defence and missile protection system “Achilles’ Shield” was approved by Greece’s Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) on Thursday, July 23, 2026.

Timeline

As Naftemporiki has reported, the new anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic and counter-drone system will be operational within 35 months. It will comprise a range of weapons systems creating overlapping “domes” over the entire Greek territory, supported by an integrated command-and-control system and involving the participation of Greece’s defense industry.

As National Defence Minister Nikos Dendias has stressed, this means that the country has entered a new era and a new reality.

“Achilles’ Shield” is not just another defense procurement programme, but represents a fundamental shift in the country’s defense strategy, aimed at moving away from standalone weapons systems toward a fully network-centric and interoperable deterrence ecosystem capable of addressing the full spectrum of modern aerial threats.
