Greece wildfires: Apocalyptic Scenes in Porto Germeno
The seaside community of Porto Germeno, west of Athens, has been left devastated after a fast-moving wildfire tore through homes, forests and properties, leaving behind scenes of destruction that residents described as “apocalyptic.”
As the flames swept through the area, hundreds of firefighters battled the blaze under extremely difficult conditions, driven by powerful winds that repeatedly changed the fire’s direction. The first images emerging from the area show burned houses, scorched vehicles and blackened hillsides, while authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage.
Eyewitness accounts paint a dramatic picture of the disaster.
“Everything is gone. Porto Germeno has burned. There are dead animals on the roads, rocks have fallen onto the streets. Everything burned,” a volunteer firefighter told Greece’s public broadcaster ERT after spending hours on the front line.
Another volunteer firefighter described the intensity of the blaze as unlike anything he had experienced.
“There was no escape route. At one point we were saying we hoped this wouldn’t become another Mati,” he said, referring to Greece’s deadliest wildfire disaster in 2018.
“The flames were 20 to 30 metres high. Porto Germeno had become one continuous fire front. The hardest part is seeing people lose their homes, and unfortunately many of them did.”
Residents speaking to OPEN TV said entire neighborhoods had been engulfed by flames.
“Forget the Porto Germeno you knew,” one witness said. “Everything is burning.”

According to local media, the wildfire also spread into a quarry area, where explosions were heard as firefighters struggled to contain the rapidly advancing flames. During the night, two fire engines were reportedly damaged while crews fought to protect homes and prevent further destruction.
At first light, aerial firefighting aircraft resumed operations, although strong winds continued to hamper their effectiveness.
Emergency services remain deployed across the area as crews work to extinguish remaining hotspots, while authorities begin documenting what is expected to be extensive damage to homes, infrastructure and the natural environment.
The wildfire is among the most destructive to hit Greece this summer, once again highlighting the growing challenge of combating fast-moving fires under extreme weather conditions.
