Greek coastal shipping is at a critical transition point
The main strategic objectives for 2026 were set in the general assembly of the Greek Shipowners Association for Passenger Ships.
Emphasis will be placed on the formulation of a national strategy for the green transition, the modernization of the institutional framework with clear and binding procedures, the modernization of port infrastructure, the support of coastal shipping entrepreneurship and the strengthening of cooperation with the State and European institutions.
In a statement, the president of the Association, Dionysis Theodoratos, said: “Greek coastal shipping is at a critical point of transition. Through institutional dialogue and substantial cooperation with the State, we can shape a sustainable and competitive framework that will effectively support insularity and the national economy.”
Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of modernizing and stabilizing the institutional framework, the competitiveness of coastal shipping companies and supporting insularity.
As highlighted, Greek coastal shipping is a vital pillar of the national economy, tourism, social cohesion and geographical continuity of the country, ensuring the connectivity of more than 115 islands and supporting the 12-month operation of the island area, especially the 89 islands that do not have an airport. It is the means that connects the island country with the mainland, supports the daily life of the islanders and ensures tourism, development and national presence in the Aegean and the Adriatic.
At the same time, the decisive role of the sector in employment, supply of the islands and the overall operation of the economy was highlighted.
