Greek shipowners poised to reach new highs
“The sea unites.” This message, which emerges from historical research and the study of the cooperation between Greek shipowners and German shipyards after World War II, was sent in the international exhibition “The Sea Unites – The Greek Shipping and the German Economic Miracles.”
The exhibition opened last week at the War Museum in Athens, and its message remains relevant today, pointing the way to the future.
The exhibition was co-organized by the Non-Profit Company NAVIRA and the International Maritime Museum Hamburg, and is based on the research work of historian George M. Foustanos. It was presented for the first time in Hamburg from September 24 to November 30, 2025. The exhibition was inaugurated by the President of the Republic, Constantine Tassoulas.
Opportunity and responsibility
Addressing the Greek shipping community, the President stated: “Greek shipowners, today, who are at the highest level of power and international influence in their history, have not only the possibility, but also the unique historical opportunity, along with the responsibility that this entails, to offer even more to Greece.
To create, to dare and to open new paths of progress. Just as they contributed to the German economic miracle, so they can lead the way in the successes of our Greek future. To do more than these remarkable things they are already doing”.
As he said, “the era we are living in, although characterized by fluidity and uncertainty, simultaneously gives rise to new opportunities for initiative and creation.
The Greek shipping industry has new peaks ahead of it that it can conquer. Greek shipowners can implement new goals and realize new plans and visions. Visions intertwined both with the consolidation of their own vanguard in the Greek and international economy, and with the course of our nation further ahead and higher in the society of European states.
If history offers a lesson, it is that the sea will always be a source of inspiration, knowledge and strength for Greece and the Greeks”.
