Hellenic Train invests €308m in 23 new electric trains and two hybrid units
Hellenic Train is renewing its rolling stock with an investment of €308 million for the procurement of 23 new Coradia Stream trains and the arrival of two new hybrid Hitachi Blues. According to a company statement, its participation in the recent Thessaloniki International Fair provides an opportunity to present to the public the progress made in renewing and modernising its fleet, as well as initiatives focused on technology, accessibility and enhancing the travel experience.
In December 2025, Hellenic Train signed a €308 million contract with Alstom for the procurement of 23 new electric Coradia Stream trains. According to the company, the investment is being financed entirely by Hellenic Train and represents the largest private investment ever made in land transport in Greece.
The new trains are divided into 12 intercity trains for the Athens–Thessaloniki route and 11 for suburban services. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2027, while Alstom will provide a 10-year technical support programme.
The company said the Coradia Stream trains, which are manufactured at Alstom’s Centre of Excellence in Savigliano, Italy, are the latest development in the Coradia family, with more than 4,500 trains from the family already in operation worldwide. The new trains will have up to 335 seats on intercity services and up to 362 on suburban services, along with low floors for step-free boarding, dedicated spaces for bicycles, pushchairs and large luggage, adaptive LED lighting and enhanced sound insulation.
Technology, testing and energy efficiency
According to a Hellenic Train statement, the new Coradia Stream trains incorporate systems such as ERTMS, ETCS and TCMS, aimed at providing modern management and control of critical train functions. Their design also incorporates energy-efficiency solutions, including modern braking and energy-recovery systems, which can reduce energy consumption by up to 10%.
The company also said the trains make use of lightweight materials, 97% recyclable materials and reduced noise levels.
Preparations for the trains’ integration into the Greek rail network are already under way. The required tests using a train of the same type were completed in June 2026 and included checks of the power subsystem at speeds of up to 160 kph, compatibility tests on lines across the Greek network, and verification of the operation of the ETCS and GSM-R systems.
Following completion of the tests, the technical reports will be assessed and the relevant dossier will be submitted to the European Union Agency for Railways and the Regulatory Authority for Railways for the required authorisation. At the same time, staff preparation and training began in 2026.
The two Hitachi Blues and the new generation of trains
Alongside the Coradia Stream, Hellenic Train is moving ahead with the introduction of two new hybrid Hitachi Blues IC trains, manufactured by Hitachi Rail.
