Infrastructure upgrade at the airports of Naxos and Heraklion

Ημερομηνία: 05-02-2026

The infrastructure at the state airports of Naxos and Heraklion were upgraded with new light signaling systems, new runway markings and asphalt paving.

According to an update from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), a new light signaling system using integrated photovoltaics was installed on the aircraft landing/take-off runway at the Naxos Airport. The installation ensures the unhindered and safe approach of aircraft during night air transport.

The new lighting fixtures, along the runway, operate with solar panels and not with electricity, which makes them energy autonomous and environmentally friendly, while reducing operating costs. The installation of the lighting fixtures enhances safety and operational readiness at the airport of Naxos.

At “Nikos Kazantzakis” Airport, Heraklion, Crete, upgrading works were carried out on marking the aircraft manoeuvring areas as well as the light signalling circuits by technical teams from the Technical Maintenance Directorates of the Civil Aviation Authority. At the same time, the asphalt paving works of the main runway of Heraklion Airport were completed on schedule.

The above works, as noted in the announcement, are part of the upgrade and maintenance program of the facilities of the regional airports managed by the CAA.
