IPTO strengthens Greece’s energy security by leveraging IBM technology
Greece is taking a significant step towards modernizing and protecting its electricity transmission infrastructure, as the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) is implementing an advanced, artificial intelligence-powered Asset Performance Management System (APMS), developed in collaboration with IBM and NOVA ICT.
The project strengthens the resilience of the national electricity grid in a period of increasing energy demand and greater reliance on diversified energy sources.
The new system is based on IBM Maximo Health & Predict, part of the IBM Maximo Application Suite, and integrates real-time IoT data, maintenance history, and environmental parameters, with the aim of providing predictive information that allows IPTO to identify potential risks to assets before they occur.
By moving from a reactive maintenance approach to an automated, data-driven decision-making process, IPTO enhances operational reliability, reduces unplanned outages, and extends the life cycle of critical assets in the national grid.
By integrating real-time IoT sensor data, maintenance history, and environmental parameters, the system allows IPTO to:
- Predict the condition of assets and the associated risks, leveraging Artificial Intelligence models for scoring and anomaly detection.
- Propose the prioritization of maintenance tasks around critical assets, reducing the likelihood of costly failures.
- Optimize replacement strategies, combining technical knowledge with financial parameters.
By leveraging ready-made AI models as well as customized Machine Learning algorithms, the administrator can identify the first signs of asset deterioration in a timely manner and proactively address potential risks. This leads to a reduction in unplanned outages, limiting operating costs and extending the asset life cycle.
The business value is clear: IPTO gains a data-driven decision-making framework that enhances the availability, reliability and efficiency of assets, while ensuring that investments in maintenance and replacement yield the maximum return. By systematically identifying high-risk assets and aligning interventions with the organization’s business priorities, Maximo APMS enables the Administrator to achieve operational excellence and long-term sustainability.
