Metlen acquires Greek energy software company Joule
Metlen is acquiring Joule, a Greek energy software company, in another strategic step aimed at digitally transforming its activities in energy portfolio representation and optimization.
At the heart of the acquisition is the jHub platform, an advanced system for the remote monitoring, control and optimization of renewable energy and energy storage portfolios. Developed exclusively by Joule, the platform enables real-time monitoring of plant operations, more accurate generation forecasting, remote implementation of curtailment commands, as well as advanced digital services for producers through an integrated customer portal.
The significance of the investment
According to a company statement, the acquisition further strengthens Metlen’s capabilities in the management and commercial optimization of renewable energy and storage portfolios, as well as its Aggregation Representation Body, one of the largest and most dynamic in the Greek market.
The portfolio currently comprises around 1,450 renewable energy plants with a total installed capacity of 3 GW, covering all major renewable energy technologies. The first two energy storage facilities, with a combined capacity of 378 MW, have also recently been added to the portfolio.
At the same time, Metlen’s Aggregation Representation Body has expanded into other European electricity markets, providing representation services to producers in Italy and Romania, while it is also in the process of expanding its activities into Bulgaria.
“In an environment of increased generation curtailments and periods of negative energy prices, the ability to manage and monitor portfolios in real time is becoming critical. By integrating jHub, Metlen gains technological autonomy in a critical operational function, strengthening its ability to optimize the operation of its energy portfolios and make more effective use of the capabilities of renewable energy units,” the company said.
The platform also creates significant opportunities for the development of new digital energy services, including advanced energy storage management applications, solutions for dispatchable renewable energy units, and the commercial management of hybrid portfolios combining renewables and storage.
The investment strengthens Metlen’s strategic position as an integrated provider of innovative energy and digital solutions in Greece and abroad.
New capabilities for Metlen’s partner producers
For producers working with Metlen, the investment marks a transition to an even more advanced service model.
In addition to representation in electricity markets, they will gain access to a modern digital environment offering a real-time view of their facilities’ operations, advanced reporting and data analytics tools, as well as access to new energy flexibility services.
The acquisition agreement provides for the continued utilization of Joule’s existing workforce expertise in product development, engineering and go-to-market activities, now supported by Metlen.
