METLEN signs long-term gallium supply deal with leading US technology company

METLEN has signed a long-term agreement to supply around 25% of the annual output from its planned gallium production facility in Greece, marking the first major commercial supply agreement between a European gallium producer and a leading US technology company.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The agreement represents a strategic milestone in Europe’s efforts to strengthen the resilience of its supply chain for critical raw materials by establishing an alternative source of gallium outside the highly concentrated global market.

“We are particularly proud that METLEN is pioneering a new industrial chapter for both Greece and Europe through the successful development of gallium production at our Aluminium of Greece plant,” Executive Chairman Evangelos Mytilineos said.

“For the first time in METLEN’s history, one of our metallurgical products has attracted such strong interest from leading industrial economies worldwide. This reflects both the strategic importance of gallium and the confidence of leading global technology companies in the quality and reliability of our material, which has already undergone extensive certification and evaluation testing,” he added.

METLEN said it is the first company in Europe to establish integrated gallium production and the first to secure a commercial agreement for European-produced gallium, positioning Greece and the European Union at the forefront of a new strategic industrial value chain.

Gallium is classified as a critical raw material and is widely used in artificial intelligence technologies, advanced renewable energy infrastructure, telecommunications and defence applications. Global production is currently heavily concentrated geographically, making the development of alternative and reliable supply sources a strategic priority for industrial economies.

The project is the result of years of research and innovation by METLEN’s research and development teams at the Aluminium of Greece industrial complex, under the company’s newly established Critical & Rare Metals division.

METLEN’s gallium investment has been designated a Strategic Project by the European Commission under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). The project has also secured financing approval from the European Investment Bank under the REPowerEU programme.

METLEN is an international industrial and energy group with operations in more than 40 countries and a workforce of over 8,500 employees. The company operates the European Union’s only fully integrated bauxite, alumina and primary aluminium production facility and is active across the energy value chain, including thermal and renewable power generation, electricity supply and trading, grid infrastructure, battery storage and other clean energy technologies.
