METLEN to invest €25 million in strategic aluminium recycling project

METLEN is proceeding with a new €25 million strategic industrial investment in EPALME,  further strengthening the Metals division’s “Integrated Aluminium Value Chain”.

According to the company, the investment aims to upgrade the processing of recycled aluminium and further strengthen its role in the European aluminium industry.

New capabilities

Through the installation of modern, highly automated sorting, processing and melting equipment, Greece’s largest independent recycled aluminium production facility will gain new capabilities, while creating stronger synergies with the “Aluminium of Greece” plant, the company said.

Beyond the significant technological upgrade of  EPALME, the investment forms part of METLEN’s strategy to build an even more vertically integrated and competitive production model. The aim is to make more efficient use of raw materials, generate greater added value and strengthen the company’s international competitiveness.

The strategy will have a direct operational impact, as the project will enable the company to handle more complex aluminium scrap streams, including new categories of post-consumer scrap — aluminium from products that have reached the end of their useful life and have so far been difficult to incorporate efficiently into production.

As a result, the strategic importance of the investment extends beyond increasing the use of recycled aluminium. METLEN will be able to move closer to the source of scrap supplies, gaining access to larger volumes of less-processed material and increasing in-house value creation through technology, expertise and industrial partnerships.

European footprint

The investment also has a clear European dimension, aligning with the European Union’s priorities on industrial resilience, strategic autonomy and the circular economy.

Within the framework of the Critical Raw Materials Act and the Clean Industrial Deal, more efficient use of aluminium scrap will help retain raw materials and added value within Europe.

Once fully operational, the project is expected to lift combined production to more than 250,000 tonnes, while increasing the profit margins of both plants. This, the company said, demonstrates that the use of recycled aluminium can deliver environmental, industrial and economic benefits at the same time.
