Danaos Corporation is making an investment shift in the energy sector. The company, which is one of the largest independent containership companies, announced the conclusion of a strategic partnership with Glenfarne Group LLC to promote the Alaska LNG project.

Specifically, Danaos Corporation will proceed with an equity investment of 50 million dollars, as part of the development financing, in Glenfarne Alaska Partners LLC, while at the same time it will be the preferred tonnage provider for the construction and operation of at least six LNG carriers, which will serve the transport of liquefied natural gas to international markets on behalf of Glenfarne Alaska LNG, LLC, which is running the Alaska LNG project.

According to the CEO of the listed shipping company, Dr. Ioannis Coustas: “As the Alaska LNG project opens up a significant new source of energy for the North Pacific, Danaos is pleased to offer its maritime expertise to reliably serve customers throughout the region and internationally, through safe and competitive LNG transport.

This transaction provides us with the opportunity to further strengthen our experience in international maritime transport and expand Danaos’ footprint in the LNG and energy sectors.”

Project

Glenfarne is developing the Alaska LNG project in two financially independent phases, with the goal of accelerating its implementation. The first phase involves the construction of a 765-mile, 42-inch diameter pipeline that will transport natural gas from Alaska’s North Slope to meet the state’s domestic energy needs. The second phase involves the addition of an LNG liquefaction terminal and related infrastructure, with the goal of exporting up to 20 million tons of LNG per year.

Glenfarne assumed the role of project leader for the Alaska LNG project in March 2025. Since then, it has secured preliminary commercial commitments from leading LNG buyers in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand, for a total of 11 MTPA, as well as strategic partnerships that include Baker Hughes and POSCO International. Glenfarne holds a 75% interest in the Alaska LNG project, with the remaining 25% owned by Alaska Gasline Development Corporation.

Glenfarne Group is a privately held global energy infrastructure developer, owner and operator. It manages and operates more than 60 energy assets through three core business areas: Global LNG Solutions, Grid Stability and Renewables. Glenfarne’s licensed portfolio of LNG projects in North America totals 32.8 MTPA and is under development in Alaska, Louisiana and Texas.
