Our priority is the safety of seafarers

The ceasefire proposal constitutes a positive development, not only for Greece but for the international community as a whole, as Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias said in statements to “Naftemporiki”.

He underscored the critical role of Greek shipping, as well as the urgent need for de-escalation, following heightened tension that triggered volatility in global energy markets, with increases in oil and natural gas prices driven by concerns over the security of maritime transport. At the same time, uncertainty has weighed on the global economy, fueling inflationary pressures and disrupting trade, transport, and supply chains.

Within this context, the Minister stressed that any armed conflict is inherently destructive and carries severe consequences, while expressing satisfaction over the announcement of a ceasefire.

As he pointed out, the ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran in the early hours of Holy Wednesday “represents a positive development that raises hopes for a gradual de-escalation of the crisis and a return to relative stability in the region,” following nearly forty days of tension. He also highlighted that this temporary cessation of hostilities—reportedly lasting two weeks—could serve as a foundation for a lasting diplomatic solution, while making clear that the situation remains highly fluid and unpredictable.

“Attacks are a source of concern”

“Conditions are changing on a daily basis,” he noted, emphasizing that incidents involving attacks on vessels at an international level are a source of serious concern for Greece.

Particular emphasis was placed on the safety of Greek seafarers, which he described as a “top priority” for both the Ministry’s leadership and the Hellenic Coast Guard.

“Our focus extends to all Greek-owned ships,” the Minister stressed, highlighting the importance of this responsibility given the scale and global influence of Greek shipping.

He also emphasized the geostrategic importance of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, which serve as critical arteries for global energy supply.

As he noted, approximately 20% of global oil trade and 25% of natural gas flows pass through this maritime corridor, making regional security a matter of international significance.

According to the Minister, these developments have direct implications not only for energy markets but for the global economy as a whole. Instability in the region can disrupt markets, drive up fuel prices, and have a significant impact on transport, trade, and production.

In this context, he highlighted the strategic role of Greek ocean-going shipping, recalling that Greece remains the world’s leading maritime power.

“This position provides the country with a significant negotiating leverage in international developments,” Kikilias added, noting that the Greek government continues to invest systematically in the maritime sector, as well as in related fields such as ports, coastal shipping, and cruise tourism.

Tourism growth and strengthening economic activity

These investments, he noted, are also directly linked to the growth of tourism, thereby supporting overall economic activity in the country.

At the same time, he referred to the operational dimension, stressing that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs remains on constant alert.

“The operations center functions on a 24-hour basis, maintaining uninterrupted communication with Greek vessels operating in the wider crisis region. On a daily basis, safety guidance is issued and adjusted in line with developments on the ground,” Kikilias stated.

Continuous updates and guidance for crews are considered critical, as he emphasized, given the high level of uncertainty. Attacks carried out through various means against commercial vessels worldwide—particularly in the Middle East—further heighten the need for increased vigilance.

He also highlighted the role of personnel from the Hellenic Coast Guard and the Ministry, who operate with professionalism and diligence around the clock to support seafarers navigating high-risk zones.

In closing, he reiterated that Greece will only be able to feel genuine relief once hostilities fully cease and the safety of all those operating at sea is ensured.

Until then, the alert will remain at its highest level.
