Port of Igoumenitsa: 1.5 MW photovoltaic park

Ημερομηνία: 06-03-2026

The Port of Igoumenitsa Authority is taking a decisive step towards sustainable development and energy autonomy, with the installation and connection of a 1.5 MW photovoltaic park, which constitutes the core of its strategy for the transition to a more modern, “green” port.

The photovoltaic park, which has been installed in the port’s shelters, utilizes the clean energy offered by the sun to cover all the energy needs of the port of Igoumenitsa, substantially contributing to the reduction of dependence on conventional energy sources and the limitation of CO₂ emissions, by at least 480 tons per year.

Through the production of green electricity, which exceeds 2,000,000 kWh per year, the port of Igoumenitsa enhances its environmental performance and ensures more sustainable and efficient operations.

The investment for the creation of the photovoltaic park is not an isolated action, but is part of an overall green transition plan, aiming at the rational management of natural resources and the creation of long-term value for the environment and the local community.

The energy produced is utilized for the needs of the port facilities, enhancing the operational adequacy of the port and supporting the modern requirements of an international transport hub.

It is also proceeding with the design of infrastructure for the supply of electricity to ships from land (OnShore Power Supply – OPS), with work starting in February 2026, which will be powered by clean energy produced by the photovoltaic park.

This specific infrastructure is expected to contribute significantly to the reduction of air pollutants and noise during the docking of ships, further strengthening the role of the port as a model of sustainable port operation.
