PPC has doubled its installed capacity in Romania
PPC Group Deputy CEO for Renewable Energy, Konstantinos Mavros, presented the PPC Group’s strategy in Romania in an interview he gave during the ZF Power Summit 2026 – Romania’s largest energy conference – taking place in Bucharest from February 23 to February 24.
“PPC Renewables Romania has already doubled its installed capacity to 1.5 GW, aiming for 2 GW of renewable energy sources by the end of the year,” Mavros stressed.
Wind farm in the Vaslui region
Mavros listed a series of RES projects that are at various stages of construction in Romania, including the iconic wind farm in the Vaslui region. Regarding the first phase of the project, Prowind North with a capacity of 140 MW and all 23 wind turbines, with a capacity of 6.1 MW each, have already been installed, with work for their connection to the grid underway. The second phase of the project, Prowind South, concerns the installation of an additional 14 wind turbines with a total capacity of 85 MW. The second phase has already started and, upon its completion, the total installed capacity of the project will reach 225 MW.
Mavros referred to the energy storage projects underway in Greece but also in Romania, where the 60 MWh BESS project at the Salbatica wind farm in the Dobrogea region was recently announced – the first of many to follow.
Adequacy and security of networks
Particular emphasis was placed on the adequacy and security of the networks, with Mavros underlining that the economic benefits from investments made across Europe will be visible in the coming years, while they should be combined with other solutions, such as flexible production, storage projects, pumped storage and the increase in interconnections between countries.
He made a particular reference to the Eurelectric study, which shows that in order to meet the increased future electricity needs, investments in Europe’s distribution networks will need to increase from 33 billion euros per year to 67 billion euros per year from 2025 to 2030.
“We need to bring cheap energy produced by RES to consumers,” he stressed, adding that “the plans for the coming years should be much more ambitious.” And the money may seem like a lot, but “if the necessary investments are not made, the cost will be much higher,” he explained.
Strategic plan for Western Macedonia
The Deputy CEO for RES of the PPC Group presented in detail the company’s strategic plan for Western Macedonia, which will be transformed into a green, energy and technological hub in the coming years, creating thousands of new jobs.
“These include more than 3,000 MW of installed capacity from RES, new modern conventional and flexible generation units, battery storage systems, two pumped storage projects – the so-called ‘natural batteries’ in the former mines in Kardia and Notio Pedio – the first industrial-scale hydrogen production unit from renewable sources in Amyntaio, the conversion of old generators at the Kardia Thermal Power Plant into modern capacitors that significantly contribute to the balancing of the ultra-high voltage system and much more.”
Finally, Mavros referred to the plans for the construction of a Giga Data Centre in the Agios Dimitrios area in Western Macedonia, which will proceed if the Group signs an agreement with PPC with hyperscalers.
