Record profits for the shipping industry
The shipping industry is facing a rare phenomenon not seen since the 2000s, with freight rates surging to very high levels across all major vessel segments and, in some cases, reaching record highs.
According to estimates, the rally is expected to continue beyond 2026, as disruptions to global supply chains caused by geopolitical tensions do not seem to retreat. The key difference from the first decade of the century, however, lies in the causes. After 2003, shipping markets were propelled by China’s rapid economic growth, as the country also prepared to host the 2008 Olympic Games and oversaw the movement of millions of people from the north to its coastal southern regions. Today, the main drivers are geopolitical conflicts, wars and natural phenomena, such as El Niño, which is expected to lead to a reduction in transits through the Panama Canal from the autumn.
This situation in shipping is increasingly becoming the new normal. Tensions remain high both in the Black Sea, amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and in the Persian Gulf, amid the confrontation between the US and Iran. At the same time, Houthi rebels aligned with Iran continue to create disruptions in the Red Sea, targeting commercial vessels linked to Saudi Arabia.
Alongside freight rates, vessel values have also soared to unprecedented levels. Greek shipowners, regarded globally as “masters of the game” not only in vessel ownership but also in ship management, appear to be particularly well positioned to benefit, gaining on three fronts: by earning record-level freight rates from operating their fleets; by selling older vessels at prices that have sent asset values into the stratosphere; and by ordering newbuildings across vessel types and incorporating the latest technologies, with orders currently approaching 1,000 vessels.
