Ryanair accuses Fraport Greece of increasing charges in Thessaloniki by 66%

Ημερομηνία: 14-05-2026

Ryanair announced that its decision to shut down its base at Thessaloniki Airport next winter was driven by Fraport’s decision to increase airport fees by 66%.

Instead of passing on to all airlines and passengers the Greek government’s decision to reduce the airport development charge by 75% in order to boost connectivity and tourism across Greece throughout the year, Fraport Greece has retained this tax reduction, using it to further increase returns for its German shareholder.

“Fraport Greece has made the Greek aviation sector severely uncompetitive compared with other European countries, such as Albania, regional areas of Italy, Slovakia and Sweden, which are actively reducing airport charges and abolishing taxes in order to support traffic growth, tourism and job creation.

Ryanair wishes to expand in Greece — as it does in other more competitive European countries — but this can only be achieved if Fraport Greece freezes airport charges and passes on the 75% reduction in the airport development fee to all airlines and passengers, in order to stimulate capacity growth and investment, rather than filling the pockets of its German shareholder. Ryanair calls on the Greek government to break up the Fraport Greece monopoly, which would bring much-needed competition to the Greek aviation market.”
