Skaramanga Shipyards advances its €100m investment plan

Skaramanga Shipyards is proceeding with its investment plan, worth around €100 million. According to information seen by “N”, the investment plan is in its final stages, while the acquisition of a Panamax-size floating dock from China is also expected to be signed.

Meanwhile, the supertanker “Acheloos” operated by Dynacom Tankers Management, owned by shipowner George Prokopiou, berthed at the shipyard for repairs. The vessel has a carrying capacity of 306,000 tonnes. It is the first VLCC to come to a Greek shipyard for repairs in decades, dating back to before 2010, when the shipyard was closed following a decision by the European Commission.

The vessel marks the shipyard’s return to very large vessels, with the shipyard also owned by George Prokopiou, despite the fact that the large fifth permanent dry dock, the largest in the Eastern Mediterranean, is not yet ready to receive vessels.

More than 130 vessels have so far been repaired at the shipyard, while more than €20 million has already been invested in infrastructure.

The shipyard’s investment plan involves upgrading its facilities and adding new areas of activity, such as high technology. Indeed, Skaramanga Shipyards, Qualco Group and Olympic Marine recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the study, development, production and demonstration of a multi-role Unmanned Autonomous Surface Vessel.

The aim is to build a fully Greek autonomous surface vessel, designed, programmed and manufactured in Greece, for both the domestic and international markets.

For the shipyard, the project represents more than another research programme. It is linked to efforts to create a new manufacturing sector, based on Greek know-how and with export potential, at a time when Greece is increasing its defence spending and Europe is seeking production solutions within its own borders.

This was preceded by an agreement with the Ministry of National Defence, through the General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments, for specialised shipbuilding and electromechanical works as part of the upgrade programme for the Hellenic Navy’s MEKO-class frigates.

Finally, on the sidelines of the international shipping exhibition, the shipyard’s CEO, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, signed a memorandum of cooperation with South Korean shipbuilding group HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The memorandum covers cooperation aimed at the joint construction of surface vessels for the needs of the navy and coast guard, targeting the wider European market.

Following the signing of the agreement, Varvitsiotis focused, among other things, on “the importance of the strategic cooperation between the world’s largest shipyard and Greece’s largest shipyard and one of the largest in the Mediterranean, achieved just two years after the resumption of operations at Skaramanga Shipyards”, while warmly thanking the two governments, those of Greece and the Republic of Korea, “which facilitated and actively supported this undertaking”.
