Strong commitment to the digital and sustainable development of shipping
The Port of Igoumenitsa is steadily advancing towards digital transformation and sustainable development, strengthening its role as a strategic maritime hub in the Adriatic-Ionian region and Greece’s main gateway to Western Europe.
At a time when European shipping is redefining its role in light of the green transition and digital integration, the Port of Igoumenitsa S.A. is shaping an integrated development model that combines operational efficiency, sustainability and transnational cooperation.
Strategic position and growth potential
The Port of Igoumenitsa occupies a strategic position at the entrance to the Adriatic and has modern infrastructure that supports combined transport, offering a safe and fast connection to Italy, as well as direct interconnection with the Egnatia and Ionian Highways.
Its regular connections with Bari, Brindisi, Ancona and Venice, as well as with Corfu and Paxoi, constitute a strong maritime transport network serving both passenger mobility and freight flows.
Today, its facilities include the Old Port, the Inland Ferry and the New Port, which is among the most important Ro-Pax ports in the Mediterranean – a key link between Greece, Italy and wider European markets.
Since the inauguration of the New Port in 2003, Igoumenitsa has developed into a key gateway for passenger and freight traffic between Greece and Western Europe, bypassing non-EU transit countries and strengthening European territorial cohesion.
2024 was a milestone year for demonstrating the consolidation of the recovery in the post-COVID era with historically high figures (arrivals and departures of vehicles, passengers and trucks – Ro-Ro / Ro-Pax).
To serve the increasing traffic, projects are underway to further expand and modernize infrastructure and services, aiming to effectively serve larger Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax vessels.
These investments are expected to strengthen the role of Igoumenitsa as one of the most important transport hubs in the region, capable of meeting the needs of future trade, while at the same time, the Port is also investing in the adoption of green practices, within the framework of the European strategy for sustainable mobility and decarbonization of transport.
