Terna and Aktor–Metka bid for €53.5 million dual project

The tender process for the Thessaloniki Western Suburban Railway and the rail connection to Pier 6 of the Port of Thessaloniki (OLTH) has concluded with two bids. The project has an estimated value of €53.5 million, excluding VAT.

Binding financial offers were submitted by Terna, part of the GEK TERNA Group, and the Aktor–Metka consortium, while, if the reports are confirmed, AVAX Group did not participate in the final stage.

The project is one of six railway tenders launched in previous years by the then ERGOSE through the competitive dialogue procedure. Their progress was delayed, among other factors, by increased funding requirements. For this particular project, Hellenic Railways decided last May to restart the tender process, with an invitation for the submission of binding bids published in early June.

The project comprises two main components. The first involves the development of the Western Suburban Railway, including the upgrade and construction of seven stations. The second concerns the connection of OLTH’s Pier 6 to the existing rail network via a new line.

The project is particularly important for freight transport, as it will strengthen rail access to the port and enhance its connections with the Balkans and Southeastern Europe.

Construction of the Western Suburban Railway is expected to take 18 months from the signing of the contract, with provision for partial handovers and the phased opening of stations. The Pier 6 connection is scheduled to be completed within 36 months.
