Theon – Rheinmetall strategic agreement for the development and supply of Phylax system
A significant collaboration in the defence sector, reflecting efforts to strengthen the interoperable European defence industrial base, has been established between the THEON Group and Rheinmetall.
THEON SENSORS, a subsidiary of THEON International, has signed a strategic agreement with Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH for the development, certification, and supply of a stabilized electro-optical system based on THEON’s PHYLAX technology. Rheinmetall, one of Europe’s largest defence groups and a provider of integrated systems with extensive expertise in vehicle-mounted electro-optical solutions, selected THEON and the PHYLAX system for its compact, lightweight remote-controlled turrets equipped with a 25mm medium-calibre cannon. These turrets incorporate the SEOSS 210P stabilized dual-axis electro-optical sighting system and are intended for deployment on modern land platforms.
Following the successful completion of testing, which is progressing according to the initial timeline, the program is expected to move into production. This will take place along with the integration of PHYLAX into the fire control system of the Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicle, with an initial contract value exceeding 40 million for the production of several hundred systems. Additional quantities are anticipated, as the PHYLAX system is progressively integrated into a growing number of vehicles and turret programs.
PHYLAX is a compact, stabilized electro-optical system designed to enhance situational awareness, reconnaissance capabilities, and target acquisition performance for combat vehicles. The system integrates a high-definition day camera, a mid-wave infrared (MWIR) thermal imager, and an eye-safe laser rangefinder within a compact and lightweight architecture, optimized for integration into unmanned turrets and remote weapon stations.
According to Christian Hadjiminas, Founder and CEO of THEON, “This contract is a testament to THEON’s design, development, and industrial capabilities in platform-based optronics, which have materialized earlier than initially planned. These efforts have been accelerated through our targeted investments in ShockEOS and Kappa Optronics, aiming to effectively leverage both internal and external expertise in design, while strengthening our international footprint through our outstanding Business Development team. This combination is expected to generate further opportunities, and this contract represents the first step among many that THEON is pursuing globally.”
