The Greek economic sentiment index edged up in September, reaching 107.6 points, from 107.2 points in July.
According to a survey by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), the improvement was attributed to a relative strengthening of expectations in Industry and Services, while the other sectors, Construction and Retail Trade, moved lower. A significant improvement was recorded in Consumer confidence.
In Construction, there was a sharp decline, due to public works, while Retail Trade saw a marginal weakening, reflecting pessimistic expectations for future sales. Services recorded a slight improvement, driven by more optimistic assessments of the current business situation and demand.
In Industry, order books and demand showed a slight improvement, while the other components of the index remained at the previous month’s levels.
Household optimism
On the household side, Greek consumers expressed more optimistic expectations about their household finances compared with the previous month, as well as about the country’s overall economic situation, while their willingness to make major purchases also increased.
“Rising energy prices, combined with price increases in basic product categories, are having a negative impact on businesses and households. Support measures for the energy market and social groups, or cuts in fuel taxes, are expected to affect both businesses and households, as well as the fiscal trajectory over the coming months. The pre-election period currently underway in the country and political developments will affect the Greek economy going forward. At the same time, the European economy as a whole is operating in an environment of inflationary pressures, as supply-side disruptions are intense and prolonged,” the IOBE survey noted.
