Crackdown tightens with AI — case file against 18 influencers

Efforts to combat illegal gambling have started to bear fruit, following the strengthening of the available tools to the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) at the beginning of the summer.

With expanded powers, more enforcement tools and greater capacity to intervene both in the physical and digital environments, inspections have uncovered hundreds of illegal websites. A case file involving 18 influencers has already been forwarded to the justice system over the promotion of:

– 11 unlicensed websites; and

– 8 unlicensed gambling operators on social media.

Data presented during a visit by Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis to the Hellenic Gaming Commission showed that the most popular profile had 623,000 followers.

The total number of followers across the 18 influencers stands at 3.6 million. It should be noted, however, that the number of followers does not necessarily represent different individuals, but it does indicate the scale of influence that can be exerted through the promotion of an illegal platform.

“The message in every direction must be clear: the internet is not a jungle. Popularity does not provide immunity, and influence entails responsibility. Anyone who uses their power and reach to promote illegal gambling should know that they will be identified, investigated and face the consequences provided for by law,” Pierrakakis said.
