Aiming for zero-defect battery manufacturing and Europe’s energy autonomy
Sunlight Group, a member of Olympia Group, hosted the eighth consortium meeting of the European BATTwin project at its industrial complex in Xanthi, bringing together research, technology and industry partners from across Europe.
The participants discussed the project’s technical achievements, progress to date and the next steps for the implementation and validation of the energy platform.
The meeting also included a technical tour of Sunlight’s automated cell production lines, aimed at aligning the interface protocols between physical production equipment and the project’s digital platform. The move lays the groundwork for the pilot industrial application of the solution.
BATTwin aims to contribute to Europe’s energy autonomy while underscoring the pivotal role of battery technology in the energy transition.
More than 80% of global lithium-ion battery production is concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region, leaving Europe under pressure to accelerate its domestic production capabilities while maintaining cost competitiveness.
Sunlight’s role in BATTwin
Against this backdrop, the Greek company is highlighting its position as a producer of integrated and innovative energy-storage technologies, as well as one of BATTwin’s key industrial partners.
Sunlight’s industrial complex in Xanthi serves as the main testing ground where the technology is being applied under real-world industrial production conditions. By providing a comprehensive operating environment, the company enables the consortium to collect and leverage the data required to train and validate complex predictive algorithms at commercial scale, across different cell geometries and chemistries.
Zero-defect battery manufacturing
BATTwin is based on the development of an innovative, multi-level digital-twin platform designed to enable Zero-Defect Manufacturing of batteries, significantly reducing failure rates on production lines.
The proposed solution is built around four key pillars.
- The first involves a multi-sensor data collection and management layer, supported by data semantics through a Battery Digital Passport model.
- The second comprises process-level digital twins that simulate critical stages of electrode manufacturing, cell assembly and cell conditioning through multiphysics, hybrid and data-driven models.
- The third pillar consists of system-level digital twins based on simulation and analytical modelling.
- The fourth focuses on digital-twin workflows that support users in the design and control of the manufacturing process, enhancing the explainability of digital models.
With a total area of 90,000 square metres and annual production capacity of 9 GWh, Sunlight’s fully automated facility is one of Europe’s most advanced battery manufacturing centres.
