The Greece-Cyprus-Israel electricity interconnection project, the Great Sea Interconnector, is an “outstanding example of Greek-French cooperation”, said IPTO Chairman and CEO Manos Manousakis at the “2nd Energy Forum”, organised by the Hellenic-French Chamber.

Manousakis described the agreement with Meridiam for its entry into the project as “historic”, stressing that the Great Sea Interconnector is the second most important electricity corridor in Europe. As he said, the interconnection with Cyprus will put an end to the island’s energy isolation, as the last EU member state not interconnected with the single European electricity market, while facilitating the integration of more renewable energy sources into its electricity system. He added that the agreement with Meridiam is crucial for the implementation of a Greek-French project that Ursula von der Leyen has ranked as the second most important among Europe’s eight major electricity corridors. In this context, he thanked Greece’s Ministry of Environment and Energy for its contribution to advancing the agreement with the French side, as well as the Hellenic-French Chamber.

Referring to the challenges the project has faced over the past period, he placed particular emphasis on the relationship of trust with the French contractor responsible for manufacturing the electricity cables. “Thanks to our cooperation with Nexans, we have kept the project alive all these years,” he said.

According to the IPTO chairman, the successful interconnection between Greece and Cyprus will complete the interconnected European system.
