Opening new avenues for cooperation with Spain's shipbuilding industry

HEMEXPO – Hellenic Marine Equipment Manufacturers and Exporters has successfully completed its first business mission to Northern Spain, with the aim of strengthening the presence of Greek marine equipment manufacturers in one of Europe’s most active shipbuilding markets and opening up another new market for Greek companies and technologies.

The delegation travelled more than 1,000 kilometres, from Vigo and Ferrol to Asturias, Santander and Bilbao, holding meetings with the Metalships & Docks, Armon, Freire, Nodosa, Navantia, Gondan, Astander and Zamakona shipyards. Representatives of ERMA TECH GROUP, EMMIS, EUROCHEM, LALIZAS, PRISMA ELECTRONICS, PSYCTOTHERM, SEABRIGHT, UTECO and VELA ELECTRIC participated, along with HEMEXPO executives, representing a broad range of Greek maritime technologies, systems and equipment for the shipping and shipbuilding industries.

During the visits, Greek companies had the opportunity to meet directly with shipyard management, procurement and commercial teams, learn about current and future shipbuilding projects, and gain a better understanding of the procedures and requirements for becoming part of the supply chains of Spanish shipyards.

The Greek delegation found a shipbuilding market with strong orderbooks, a high level of technological expertise and significant demand for new, reliable and flexible suppliers, as several Spanish shipyards already have newbuilding programmes extending into the coming years. Of particular interest was the range and technological complexity of vessels being built in Northern Spain, from research and oceanographic vessels, fishing boats, passenger/ro-ro ferries and tugboats to patrol vessels, naval ships and support vessels, as well as highly demanding repair and conversion projects.

A highlight of the mission was the visit to Navantia in Ferrol, where, among other projects, the Spanish Navy’s new-generation F-110 frigate programme is underway. The interest expressed in Greek technologies was followed by concrete action, with Navantia sending NDAs to Greek companies participating in the mission as early as the day after the meeting, with a view to exploring specific cooperation opportunities.

The mission forms part of HEMEXPO’s ongoing internationalisation programme, which it has pursued since its establishment in 2014 through national pavilions at major international shipping exhibitions, targeted business missions and networking initiatives in key markets worldwide.

Through this sustained activity, HEMEXPO has evolved into an important internationalisation platform for Greece’s marine equipment industry, providing its member companies with access to new markets, international networks and business opportunities that are difficult to develop individually.

At the same time, HEMEXPO is seeking to continuously strengthen and expand its network so that an increasing number of Greek companies in the sector can capitalise on opportunities created through its international activities.
