The Ellinikon Park to offer free and open access to all

The Ellinikon Park, at the heart of the major redevelopment of The Ellinikon, will be free and accessible to all, with the project aiming to become one of Europe’s largest urban green spaces.

The park will be connected to neighboring municipalities through 21 different access points, while the cost of its maintenance, security and cleaning will be covered by LAMDA Development.

Free access will apply to the main green and public areas. Registration may be required for certain organized activities, sports programs or special events, as is already the case at The Ellinikon Sports Park.

More than 32,000 trees and 3.3 million plants will be planted, with particular emphasis on creating a park adapted to the Mediterranean climate.

During the first phase alone, 16,520 trees are expected to be planted, with the total number exceeding 32,000 once the project is completed.

A total of 2.65 million aromatic shrubs as well as pine, olive, oak, carob, Judas trees, plane trees and almond trees will be planted.

The aim is for around 70% of the vegetation to survive with little or no irrigation.

A wastewater treatment unit is also planned in cooperation with EYDAP, in a bid to reduce water consumption.

A park designed for “1,000 years”

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the design philosophy developed by Sasaki is its time horizon: 1,000 years.

This does not mean the park is expected to remain unchanged for a millennium. Rather, the aim is to create an ecosystem resilient enough to survive even under extremely adverse conditions.
