Greece doubles fishing diesel subsidy

The government has doubled the fishing diesel subsidy it had pledged to provide to professional fishermen, Minister of Rural Development and Food Margaritis Schinas announced, following consultations with the Ministry of National Economy and Finance.

Given that diesel accounts for the largest share of production costs in the fishing sector, the subsidy will rise to €0.32 per litre (from €0.16) for April and May 2026 and to €0.24 per litre (from €0.12) for June, July and August 2026, through de minimis state aid, aimed at supporting fishermen in response to rising energy costs.

According to the Ministry of Rural Development, the new measure provides the sector with support comparable to that received by farmers, who were granted assistance for fertilisers, the largest production cost in agriculture.

The government is also exploring the mobilisation of additional resources to support fishermen in the coming months and will make relevant announcements within October.

As the ministry pointed out, “the government has provided tangible support to the country’s fishermen in recent years, recognising the major challenges they face:

– €41 million was paid in 2024 and 2025 to around 9,500 professional fishermen for damage to their nets caused by protected marine species, including dolphins, seals and sea turtles, covering the three-year period 2022-2024.

– During the initial period of the Ukraine crisis, €25 million was paid in 2022 to 9,391 professional fishermen as compensation for the additional costs and loss of income caused by disruptions to the market and supply chain.

– The deadline for professional fishermen to submit applications for the modernisation of their vessels, with a total budget of €16 million, expires on 16 October 2026.

For the first time in 12 years, the recent Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels reached an initial agreement on the new European framework for supporting the fisheries sector for 2028-2034. Among other provisions, the framework allows for support for the renewal and upgrading of the fishing fleet, a long-standing demand of the sector.”
