Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnector's works resume

The Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection is progressing, with the French-flagged vessel ABEILLE MARENGO undertaking the necessary work for the Great Sea Interconnector, following the decision to resume bathymetric surveys.

According to a statement by the Hellenic Coast Guard, an application has been submitted for an exemption allowing the use of the French-flagged vessel ABEILLE MARENGO (IMO: 9388613) to conduct marine surveys for the installation of submarine direct-current cables as part of the Crete-Cyprus interconnection (Great Sea Interconnector). The request seeks an exemption for the use of the specialised survey vessel in “the marine areas where the surveys are to be conducted that fall within national territorial waters”.

According to the application, the survey will use a multibeam echosounder (MBES), side-scan sonar (SSS), a magnetometer and video equipment to document in detail seabed conditions along the entire route, with a view to selecting the optimal final alignment for the subsequent installation and laying of the cables.

In addition, geotechnical core samples will be collected at depths of up to 700 metres below the sea surface to determine the appropriate method of protecting the cables on the seabed.

The vessel, which is currently in Naples, Italy, will notify the Hellenic Navy Hydrographic Service, the Submarine Command and the relevant maritime authorities 72 hours before the start of operations and on a daily basis thereafter, providing all necessary information, including coordinates, a description of the work and the required safety distance.

“At present, there is no other change to the overall procedure concerning the survey route for the intended laying and alignment of the cable,” it added.
